When I finished watching The Secret Life of Pets 2, it was a bit hard to know how to evaluate it. First, as in the first film, the sequel is animated and vivid, with attractive characters and plenty of jokes. Its defect lies mainly in narrative aspect. Of course, the first one does not pay too much attention to storytelling. But the goal of the first film is clear: to create a funny cartoon, focusing on making jokes and farces, and keeping the story simple. In the second part, the plot becomes extremely simple and the story clues are very scattered. If the first one is to try to bring together each protagonist, the sequel feels more like a combination of three short films.
The whole two films are analyzed and found to be very similar to Toy Story’s plot, almost revolving around the secret lives of pets or toys when the owners are not at home.
The Secret Life of Pets 2 is divided into three plot lines. From the perspective of Max, the owner dog, accompanied by the owner, he became the third parent of the owner’s children. However, this parental mentality of Max in The Secret Life of Pets 2 is not as serious as Woody in Toy Story 4. After all, the emotions in Toy Story 4 are infinitely close to the depth in adult movies, while The Secret Life of Pets 2 is just a little more. But the two results are the same. After a single adventure, they both learned to let go and accept it calmly.
Another line was Snowball’s accidental encounter with a tiger that had been imprisoned and abused by a circus. This story is almost identical to Toy Story 1, which is about saving companions from abusers. The third line really has its own characteristics, fully tapping the various characteristics of pets, creating a dog impersonating a cat, the dog became the head of the cat’s funny play.
The contraction of the three lines is based on the circus plot as the entry point, but it is too simple, not too strong connection. It can be seen as a piece of three stories, just like the mission of a dog. But in the end, the play played a very good role in different animals and formed a reference to some of the bedding buried in front of it.
The Secret Life of Pets 2 is full of characters and storylines. It’s interesting, but it’s not very skillful. Although the movie lasts only 86 minutes, sometimes you feel restless because the plot keeps jumping from one branch to another. Although the director did bring everything together to climax in the end, the whole process seemed chaotic. Nevertheless, the film does provide the audience of all ages with heartfelt laughter and entertainment effect of temporarily abandoning all worries.
